BMW established the M badge of their market in 1972, now 40 years later BMW is releasing a new generation of the M3 and created the M3 Competition Edition coupes for the North American market to celebrate the history of the M.

BMW M, also known as M-Technik or just “M” for Motorsport, was initially created to facilitate BMW’s racing program. The racing program was extremely successful in the 1960s and 1970s but as time passed BMW began to incorporate the M series into their general vehicle lines and were specialized to be higher trim models only. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications.

There will be a total of 40 different variations of the special edition M3 available and all will be finished in the new Frozen Silver color. The cars will feature black hood intakes, dark chrome trim pieces, black 19-inch M3 GTS wheels and interior upgrades.

Some of the interior updates will include Novillo leather trim in black and palladium silver accents. There will also be an Alcantara-covered multi-function M steering wheel, a handbrake lever with the M Power logo embroidered, and various M3 checkered flag embellishments. Finally BMW added a genuine carbon fiber trim to the dash and center console, which M-series Phoenix drivers should appreciate.

No drivetrain modifications were applied but the car still creates an output of 414 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque with the 4.0-liter V-8 engine.  BMW’s seven-speed M DCT dual clutch transmission has also been applied, promising 0-60 mph acceleration of 4.5 seconds.

In the past with the introduction of any new M series car it usually sold out in minutes after the launch. To avoid this BMW allocated one of the 40 designs of the BMW M3 Competition Edition cars to each of the first 40 authorized BMW centers that became M Certified Centers. Head to your Phoenix BMW dealer for more information.

This fall BMW will extend its “is” badging to the 1-series with coupes and convertibles. The 2013 335is is similar to the 335i but with performance upgrades.

The engine output increases to 320 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque which is 20 hp and 17 lb-ft more than the standard 135i. There is the choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch transmission and the car gets an upgraded cooling system. The 135is also comes standard with a more powerful radiator fan and an auxiliary radiator, which are dealer installed upgrade options on the standard 135i. BMW will also include Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Traction Control to raise the threshold for sporty driving performance.

The 2013 135is will also operate at cooler temperatures and therefore will also offer greater efficiency in power delivery. The car uses new double-helical ball bearings, reduced friction, and the amount of lubricant needed within the differential. While the 135is may not have the mechanical limited-slip differential that is found in the BMW 1-Series M Coupe, it does use a brake-based simulated differential lock that improves acceleration and low-traction grip. This offers BMW consumers a higher performance feel to the car while still being more relaxed than the M coupe.

The interior and exterior upgrades on the 135is are very similar to the M Sport package for the 135i. The upgrades include an M steering wheel, sport seats that can be ordered with blue contrast stitching, and black exterior trim with chrome accents. On the outside the car has a black kidney grille which again is usually an additional cost and black side-mirror caps that solidify the cars darker appearance. Stainless steel pedals and an 18-inch wheel design are unique to the 135is and make the car stand out.

The 2013 BMW 135is Coupe and Convertible will arrive at dealers this fall, but for any further questions please contact your local Phoenix BMW dealer.
