First-ever i8 Roadster Coming in 2019

If the thought of racing through the desert in a technologically advanced roadster with the wind rushing through your hair and the sun on your face keeps you going every day, you are going to be thrilled with the 2019 BMW i8 Roadster. This new version of BMW’s athletic plug-in hybrid will be coming to Chapman BMW in Chandler next spring, offering drivers with a healthy budget the chance to let their hair down and blast from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. The main difference between the Roadster and the current i8 is the ability to quickly open and lower the top, taking just 16 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph. The top stores neatly away, taking up very little space and leaving the Roadster with clean lines as it cuts through the air.

Lowering Roof Raises Rear Window

If you’ve ever ridden in a convertible, you know that while it’s always fun, it can be a little disconcerting to be buffeted about by the wind. When you put the top down in the new BMW i8 Roadster, the rear window raises up just a couple of inches, guiding the air flow toward the rear of the car and reducing wind turbulence in the cockpit. The driver has the ability to raise or lower the rear window as desired to reduce the wind in the vehicle. The design of the soft top uses lightweight materials, additional soundproofing and innovative technology to ensure everything fits tightly together. Some elements of the infrastructure are created with a 3D printer, ending up in a geometric design that wasn’t possible before using traditional casting methods.

Power to Spare

While there will be times when the gas engine kicks in, particularly upon acceleration, you’ll notice the quiet of the electric motor more than ever when you take the i8 Roadster for a spin. The gas and electric motors combine for a muscular 369 horsepower and electronically limited maximum speed of 155 mph. A new lithium-ion battery pack has 14 more amp-hours than the previous model, allowing the Roadster to travel up to 18 miles in all-electric mode. You don’t need to be worried about being stranded without power as the gas engine kicks in to bring the electric motor back up to optimal levels as needed.

Dare You Not to Say Wow

Take one look at the new i8 Roadster and it will be very difficult not to drop your jaw and say WOW. From the gullwing doors that swing up to the air flap control system, contoured side skirts and brilliant color combinations, this is one sports car that makes people sit up and take notice.
